Kaelyn Carson Walkathon
4/11/2007 12:00:00 AM | Track & Field
MOUNT PLEASANT The sixth annual Kaelyn Carson Walkathon, hosted by the Central Michigan University women’s Track and Field team, will be held on Sunday April 22nd from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Indoor Athletic Complex track bay.
Carson was a member of the CMU track and field team from 2000-2001. She passed away in July of 2001 from complications due to an eating disorder. Teammate Shelley Christensen, in an effort to raise awareness of eating disorders, began the walkathon in the spring of 2002.
All proceeds will be donated to Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), a national non-profit organization which acts as a resource center that seeks to alleviate problems with eating disorders. ANAD offers free programs across the country in education and prevention, advocacy for insurance discrimination, and legislation along with support groups.
Last year the event raised just under $4,000 and the team has a goal of breaking that mark this year. To help with the goal, the team has added selling t-shirts, available for $10.
Sadie Leibfritz, a freshman middle distance runner on the women’s track and field team is one of the three ladies coordinating the event this year.
“The t-shirts have a heart on them with a slogan of “Love Your Body,” which is the new focus of awareness for the walkathon this year,” said Leibfritz.
In past years, the walkathon has been used to bring awareness to eating disorder signs and causes. The team has decided to turn the focus to promoting a healthy body image.
“We want people to feel comfortable with themselves and be happy with their bodies,” said Leibfritz.
There will be free food and education booths on eating disorder signs, causes, and prevention.
