“It was unfortunate that we couldn’t finish the schedule of events today,” CMU head coach Karen Lutzke said. “This was a good meet with good competition, and we had several people that weren’t able to compete this afternoon. We just want to be able to get a full meet in.”
It’s the second straight week that weather conditions impacted a track meet, as the Chippewas were forced to cancel a home meet slated for last Saturday due to snow and cold in
In limited action on Saturday, CMU’s best performance came from the 4x100m relay team of Ariss Seals, Cara Dukes, Najah Floyd and Tempestt Stanford. They turned in an eighth-place finish in a time of 46.30 in the relay.
On the first day of action on Friday, junior Jenaie Edwards turned in the best performance, running the second-fastest 800m time in CMU history and earning a top 10 individual finish. Her time was just three-hundredths of a second shy of the school record in that event.
Edwards, competing for the first time since the Alex Wilson Indoor Invitational at Notre Dame on March 2, clocked in at 2:10.33 in the 800m, just missing Mari Chandler’s record mark of 2:10.30 set in 1999. Edwards finished tenth overall in the 800m, and was just a half-second away from an NCAA qualifying mark (2:09.80).
“That was probably the best 800m I’ve seen Jenaie run,” Lutzke said. “It was nice to see her back competing, and that should really give her a lift as the start of her outdoor season.”
CMU’s 4x200m relay team also had a top 10 finish, placing seventh in the event. The squad of Ariss Seals, Cara Dukes, Stephanie Byrne and Najah Floyd finished in a time of 1:39.74.
Other notables efforts from Friday’s action on the Tom Black Track at the University of Tennessee came from freshman Erika Schroll (tied for 10th in high jump clearing 5-5), junior sprinter Tempestt Stanford (11th in the 100m with a time of 12.02) and junior Ashley Anderson (personal-best 4:42.85 in the 1500m).
CMU will split its squad next weekend and compete in two different meets. The Chippewas will send several athletes to the Auburn Invitational in
