MOUNT PLEASANT Former Central Michigan University wrestling coach Charles “Chick” Sherwood received the Lifetime Service Award from the Michigan Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Radisson Hotel on Sunday in Lansing.
Sherwood was one of four individuals who received the honor. He joined Al Kastl, Massaki Hatta and Jare Klein.
The Michigan Chapter is a direct extension of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Chapter and Museum in Stillwater, Okla. The Michigan Chapter provides outreach and support for the National Hall and it was formed to honor committed coaches, officials, contributors and other deserving officials.
The Lifetime Service Award recognizes dedicated wrestling people for their years of commitment to young student-athletes. The award is not about win/loss records, it is about a person’s dedicated effort to help young people to not only succeed in wrestling, but also in life.
Each award recipient is permanently recognized in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. with an embossed name plaque and each inductee receives a plaque and jacket to commemorate this special occasion.
Sherwood was the head wrestling coach at CMU for 25 years from 1965 to 1989. He posted an all-time record of 196-125-6 and his team won the 1970 Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and the 1986 and ’87 Mid-American Conference titles.
Sherwood was named MAC Coach of the Year three times and guided CMU to a sixth-place national finish at the NCAA college division finals in 1971 and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division I finals in 1981. He coached 11 All-Americans, one NCAA finalist, 23 MAC champions and two U.S. Olympic team members.
He was inducted into the CMU Hall of Fame in 1998 and is also a member of three others halls of fame.
