Women's Hoops Announces 2007-08 Schedule

MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University women’s basketball head coach Sue Guevara has announced her team’s full schedule for the 2007-08 season. The first-year coach will lead her Chippewas against opponents from the Atlantic 10, the Big East, the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference as part of a 13-game non-conference slate before beginning the 16-game Mid-American Conference schedule in January.
CMU fans will get a good look at Guevara and this year’s team right away, as the Chippewas play two exhibitions and three of their first four non-conference games in Rose Arena at the beginning of November. CMU has exhibition contests scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1 versus Ferris State (7 p.m.), and Sunday, Nov. 4 against Aquinas College (2 p.m.).
The season opener is set for Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., when CMU welcomes Illinois-Chicago to Mount Pleasant. Following a road game against Temple and a home contest with Chicago State, CMU hosts Notre Dame in the marquee non-league game of the season. The Fighting Irish make their first trip to Rose Arena for a 7 p.m. contest against CMU on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
CMU will play in two tournaments during the non-conference season. The first comes at Northwestern University, where CMU will play in the Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1. CMU will face host Northwestern on Friday at 8 p.m. CST, then meet either Wagner or Boston College on the second day of the tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The second tournament will be the Dynamic Pension Services Classic at the University of Dayton on Dec. 29-30. CMU will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round, then meet either Cornell or the host Flyers on Sunday. CMU wraps up non-conference play at SEC opponent Mississippi on Thursday, Jan. 3.
“We have put together a non-conference schedule that will both challenge us, and prepare us for our Mid-American Conference slate,” Guevara said. “The opportunity for us to play five of our first six games, including exhibitions, at home is exciting. It will give our fans a chance to get see this team play and get behind us. I also think games against top-tier foes like Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Cincinnati and Northwestern will allow us to she how we match up against those teams and how we need to improve.”
CMU opens the MAC slate with a trip to Toledo on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. The first conference home game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12, against archrival Western Michigan, at 2 p.m.
The Chippewas will play three consecutive Saturday afternoon MAC games as doubleheaders with the CMU men’s team. The games against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 19, Ohio on Jan. 26, and Miami on Feb. 2, will all tip off at 4 p.m., with the men’s games to follow at 6:30 p.m.
The standout home game in the conference comes on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when the Chippewas host two-time defending MAC champion and 2007 NCAA Sweet 16 participant Bowling Green at Rose Arena at 7 p.m.
The MAC slate wraps up with the final home game against Toledo on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m., and the final conference game at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m.
For the second year in a row, all 12 MAC schools will go to Cleveland, Ohio to participate in the Kraft MAC Women’s Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena. Dates and times have yet to be determined for the first round games and quarterfinal matchups. The semifinals will be played on Friday, March 14, and the championship game is slated for Saturday, March 15.
