Women's Track Competes at Eastern Michigan This Weekend

MOUNT PLEASANT With two notable exceptions senior Jenaie Edwards and junior Kelly McClure the Central Michigan University women’s track and field team will head to Ypsilanti to continue preparations for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at the Eastern Michigan Classic this Saturday, Feb. 16. The Chippewas will compete in a non-scored meet at Bob Parks Track inside EMU’s Bowen Fieldhouse, the same facility that will host the conference meet two weeks later.
Edwards and McClure will eschew Saturday’s meet for the chance to measure themselves against the best from across the country on Friday, Feb. 15, at the prestigious Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Edwards will run the 400m at Arkansas, while McClure will take to the track for the 5000m at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for both Jenaie and Kelly to experience competition against the best from across the country,” CMU head coach Karen Lutzke said. “We want them to go down to Arkansas and run fast on the track that will host the NCAA Indoor Championships next month and challenge themselves in that environment.”
Edwards will be one of 109 athletes competing in the 400m, which will hold preliminary heats beginning at 2:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The finals will not take place until Saturday at 3 p.m. McClure will run in the 5000m at 12:40 p.m. on Friday.
The rest of the Chippewas will look to continue the momentum from last week’s performance in winning the BGSU Quadrangular over MAC rivals, Bowling Green, Toledo and Ohio. Several athletes netted top-three individual finishes at the quad meet.
“We want to continue to improve, both individually and as a team, in anticipation of the MAC meet in two weeks,” Lutzke said. “We’re going to work on specific things during this meet that will make us better going forward.”
Saturday’s meet at EMU will get underway at 9 a.m. with the throwing events, while running events will kick off with the distance medley relay at noon. The final event of the meet, the 4x400m relay, is slated for 5:20 p.m.
