MOUNT PLEASANT Three Mid-American Conference foes that Central Michigan has not competed against this season provide the opposition this Friday as the Chippewa women’s track and field team heads to the Bowling Green Quadrangular on Feb. 8. Field events begin at 5 p.m., in Perry Field House.
Competing in the scored meet along with CMU and host BGSU are Toledo and Ohio.
“We haven’t seen any of these teams this season and we’ll see where we stack up against all three with the MAC meet approaching,” coach Karen Lutzke said. “I think Toledo has made a big jump since last season.”
The meet will score two individuals from each team using the international scoring system.
“Our sprinters are going to be facing a challenge in Toledo’s Breezie Gibson, one of the MAC’s top sprinters,” Lutzke said. “The throws are strong events for Bowling Green and Ohio, and both Toledo and Ohio have strong distance groups.”
CMU is coming off a third-place finish at the Michigan Intercollegiates last week at the University of Michigan. No. 5-ranked Michigan won the seven-team event. Elizabeth Carpenter was the lone champion for CMU as she took the 5000m in a time of 18:09.58.
Following this weekend, CMU will have just two more weeks of competition before heading to the Mid-American Conference Championships at Eastern Michigan Feb. 29-March 1.
Getting Close: After the BGSU Quadrangular, CMU will have just two more weeks of competition before the league meet Feb. 29-March 1. The Chippewas are looking to improve their team consistency before the MAC Championships. “We have to get everyone to perform well individually together on a given day so we have a good overall team performance,” Lutzke said. “We really haven’t had that yet. Each of our events has done well at a meet this season but we haven’t put it all together. It’s a matter of building confidence and going out there and performing.”
Carpenter Racking Up Wins: CMU’s most successful performer so far this season has been distance runner Elizabeth Carpenter. She has racked up event victories in three of the four races she’s competed in, including the 5000m at last week’s Michigan Intercollegiates. “Her times are not some of the best in the MAC right now but you can’t take away the fact that she’s won the races,” Lutzke said. “She’s running with a lot of confidence.” Back in the spring, Carpenter was the recipient of CMU’s prestigious Boyden Award, an award that factors in academics, community service and involvement with the arts. “Libby is a genuine, loving person,” Lutzke said. “She gets along with everyone and a lot of times she puts others before herself. She’s a great leader and an encourager. Libby doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, except for during the last lap of a race.”
