BOWLING GREEN, Ohio A balanced team effort led Central Michigan to the team title at the BGSU Quadrangular on Friday night at Perry Field House.
The Chippewas won six events while scoring 170 points. Toledo was second (128 points) followed by Bowling Green (124) and Ohio (109).
“It was our best team’ finish all year,” coach Karen Lutzke said. “I was pleased with how we competed and stepped up in all our events. This is what we’ve been talking about in terms of everyone coming together in the same meet.”
An international scoring system was used with two athletes scoring from each team.
Picking up first-place finishes for CMU were Amanda Rudert in the 5000m (18:12.93), Sarah Squires in the mile (5:11.06), Stephanie Byrne in the 400m (57.86), Jenaie Edwards in the 200m (25:24), Erika Schroll in the high jump (5-4) and the 4x400m relay team (3:52.93).
The Chippewas scored major points with one-two finishes in the 200m, 400m and mile. Cara Dukes was second in the 200m (25.54), freshman Alexandra Sisson second in the 400m (59.74) and Raeanne Lohner second in the mile (5:14.07).
Also recording runner-up finishes were Tempestt Stanford with a season-best 7.65 in the 60m and Jodi Matsko in the long jump with a leap of 17-8 .
Some notable third-place finishes included Aleisha Leeper in both the long jump (17-8) and triple jump (36-3 ) and Crystal Stanley breaking nine seconds in the 60m hurdles (8.99).
“I was really pleased with our performances,” Lutzke said. “Our throwers had an outstanding meet and the distance runners were running for place, we weren’t too concerned about times. We had three long jumpers over 17 feet for the first time this season. We saw lots of improvements and good things happening out there.”
The Chippewas have just two more weekends of competition before heading to the Mid-American Conference Championships Feb. 29-March 1 at Eastern Michigan. Most of CMU’s athletes will compete at the MAC venue next Saturday, Feb. 16, in the EMU Classic. A select few athletes will get a glimpse at the NCAA Championships venue when they head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16.
CMU’s final tune-up for the MAC meet is its own Jack Skoog Open on Friday, Feb. 22.
