NCAA Wrestling Championships Session IV Notebook
Wynn Michalak is CMU’s first national finalist since Casey Cunningham in 1999. Cunningham won the 157-pound national title that season after finishing runner-up in 1998.
Saturday night’s finals will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 8:30 p.m. EDT (7:30 p.m. CDT).
Current CMU assistant coach Casey Cunningham defeated Penn State’s Clint Musser in the 157-pound final at Penn State in 1999. Saturday night, Michalak will face Penn State’s Phil Davis in the 197-pound final.
Saturday night’s final will mark the second time Michalak and Davis will meet at the national tournament. In 2005, Michalak posted a 6-5 decision over Davis in the consolation quarterfinals. Michalak went on to finish sixth and earn All-America honors that season; Davis earned All-America honors by placing seventh that year.
CMU’s contingent of four All-Americans is the largest in a single season for the program since 2005, when CMU also had four All-Americans. In 1999, the Chippewas boasted a school-record five All-Americans.
CMU enters the final day of the tournament with 61.5 team points. It is already the second-most points the Chippewas have ever scored at the national tournament. The 1999 Chippewas accumulated 67.5 team points and placed seventh overall.
Brandon Sinnott is now 4-0 over the last two seasons against Hofstra’s Alton Lucas after claiming a 3-1 sudden victory decision in the consolation quarterfinals Friday night.
Wynn Michalak is the third three-time All-American in CMU history. Both Brandon Sinnott and Bubba Gritter earned their second consecutive All-America honors this season. A total of 12 individuals in program history have earned All-America honors more than once.
Christian Sinnott will face No. 7 seed Phil Keddy (Iowa) in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning. Sinnott is 2-0 against Keddy this season, defeating him twice at Midlands in December.
Tom Borrelli is in his 17th season as the head coach at CMU. During his tenure, the Chippewas have earned a total of 27 All-America honors.
Through four of the tournament’s six sessions, CMU is one of just two schools not from the Big 10 or Big 12 in the top 14 in the team standings. The Chippewas are fifth, while Cornell is ninth entering Saturday.
