MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University senior wrestler Wynn Michalak (Caro, Mich./Caro HS) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Michalak is one of 58 student-athletes from the winter season to receive a postgraduate scholarship. The winners (29 men and 29 women) will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500.
The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.
Michalak will go into the history books as one of CMU’s most accomplished wrestlers, both on the mat and in the classroom. The 2008 national runner-up at 197 pounds, Michalak was a three-time All-American, four-time Mid-American Conference champion and three-time MAC Wrestler of the Year honoree. He is the fourth individual, and first Chippewa, to win four individual MAC titles. Michalak ranks fourth in school history in victories (128), second in career winning percentage (.842) and third in career pins (50).
Michalak is a two-time recipient of CMU’s Chick Sherwood Award as the program’s Most Valuable Wrestler.
Set to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, Michalak is a double major in mathematics and physical education. He maintains a 3.81 grade-point average. Michalak was the inaugural recipient of the Dick Enberg Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented annually to a junior student-athlete at CMU who excels at the highest levels both in the classroom and on the playing field and is involved in the community.
Michalak is a four-time member of the Academic All-MAC team and two-time selection to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team. He also was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV At-Large team last season.
Michalak is the second CMU wrestler in the past three seasons to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Current assistant coach Mark DiSalvo was the last recipient in 2006.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
