MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University senior wrestler Wynn Michalak (Caro, Mich./Caro HS) has been named the recipient of the Mid-American Conference's Bob James Award.
The Bob James Memorial Scholarship, in its 19th year and selected by the conference's faculty athletics representatives, recognizes one female and one male student-athlete who have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5, and have displayed good character, leadership and citizenship. The student-athletes are nominated during the year in which they complete their final season of eligibility. The $5,000 post-graduate scholarship is awarded in honor Bob James, the second commissioner in Mid-American Conference history (1964-71).
The female recipient was Bowling Green volleyball player Stephanie Swiger.
Michalak graduated from Central Michigan with a double major in physical education and secondary mathematics education, earning an overall GPA of 3.81. He plans to pursue a graduate degree in athletic administration at Central Michigan.
Michalak is one of just four wrestlers in MAC history to win four individual conference titles. He was named MAC Wrestler of the Year three times and was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2005.
A three-time All-American, Michalak was the 197-pound national runner-up as a senior in 2008.
Michalak was the inaugural recipient of CMU’s Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The four-time Academic All-MAC selection also received the 2007 MAC Commissioner’s Award and 2008 MAC Presidential Award. He was also a four-time member of the NWCA All-Academic team.
In addition to his academic and athletic accomplishments, Michalak has earned the Tom R. Jones Student Leadership Award, was on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the Central Michigan Representative at the NCAA Leadership Conference.
