MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan assistant women’s basketball coach Kathy McGee will be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame on Sunday. It will be the third hall of fame to enshrine her decorated career.
The ceremony will be held in the Bovee University Center on CMU’s campus at 1 p.m.
McGee came to CMU from Flint Powers Catholic High School where she had been the girls’ basketball coach since 1976 and is just shy of 600 career wins with an all-time record of 599-153 (.797).
“I feel I was so blessed to coach so many great kids over my career and working at Powers Catholic,” McGee said. “This award really represents the people I worked with and the kids I coached and I’m very humbled to have been a part of that program. I’m really accepting this award on behalf of all of them.”
McGee led the Chargers to four state titles, four runner-up finishes, 13 final fours, 13 regional championships, 20 district championships, and 18 league titles. Her teams hold the state records for most consecutive regional titles (10) and district crowns (19). She was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National High School Basketball Coach of the Year in 2002 and received the same honor in 2001 from the National Federation of High School Coaches.
She also served as a high school teacher at Powers for 19 years and was the athletics director there for 11 years (1992-03). She worked as the school’s Director of Development and Alumni Relations from 2003-06.
From 2000-05, McGee served on the Michigan High School Athletic Association Representative Council and was the lone high school coach on the WBCA Board of Directors from 1989-95. She was also the first female president of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (1993-95).
In 2002, McGee was inducted into both the Basketball Coaches of Michigan Hall of Fame and the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame. She received the MHSAA’s Women in Sport Leadership award in 1999 and was selected to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball in the 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow.
The Elkton, Michigan native has sent multiple players to the college ranks including former CMU standout Ann Skufca, a two-time honorable mention All-Mid-American Conference selection. McGee also coached former Michigan State star Victoria Lucas-Perry and Western Michigan’s Kelly Koerber, both all-conference performers at their respective schools.
McGee is a Chippewa alumna having received both her bachelor of arts degree in secondary education (1973) and master’s degree in secondary school administration (1988) from CMU.
“It’s also a great added bonus that the induction ceremony is going to be held here at CMU,” McGee said. “It’s my alma mater and obviously I’m very excited about being part of the coaching staff and the direction we’re going here.”
