Szunko Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio Central Michigan’s Kaihla Szunko was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week today, the league office announced. The award covers the competitions that took place over the winter break.
Szunko recorded a double-double in four straight games beginning on Dec. 20 and capped off with a 14 point, 15 rebound effort in a 95-88 win over Morehead State at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville. The health fitness major also added four blocks, four steals and three assists. In a loss to No. 10 Louisville, Szunko tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 25 minutes. Szunko also had double-doubles of 15 points and 14 rebounds against New Hampshire (Dec. 28) and 11 points and 10 rebounds at Milwaukee (Dec. 20). Over the four games, the Saginaw, Mich. native is averaging 12.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots and 2.7 assists.
The junior currently sports a 3.84 grade-point average while leading the league in rebounding at 9.1 boards per game.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
