Chippewas Show Well at Saginaw Valley

SAGINAW, MICH.- Erika Schroll started off her indoor track and field season on a strong note as she earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the high jump during the pentathlon.
Schroll's jump of 5-10 earned her the qualifying mark and it also slated a new personal best. Schroll won the pentathlon with 3,525 points.
In other field events, Tanisha Johnson competed unattached and won the high jump (5-7 3/4), Katie McColly won the long jump with her leap of 17-9 1/2, McColly also won the triple jump with a 35-7 3/4 mark. Charity Sunderman competed unattached in the weight throw, winning with a toss 56-10.
On the track Jordan Dunn led the 60m dash with her first place finish (7.77), other Chippewas competing in the 60m dash include Brittnee Shreve (second, 7.83), Cara Dukes (third, 7.89) and Shanaye Carr (fourth, 7.95).
Stephanie Byrne won the 200m dash with a time of 26.41, Stephanie Hurley took first in the 400m dash (58.77) and Allie Sisson took first in the 800m run (2:22.55).
Also competing in the 800m was Katy Olsen, who finished second for CMU (2:25.58). Veronica Garcia took first in the mile run, crossing the line in 5:23.48 and Laura Wilson took fifth in the event (5:46.50).
Freshman Tamica Harbour took first in the 60m hurdles with an 8.86 finish, also competiting for the Chippewas Brittnee Shreve (second, 9.05) and Stephanie Foster (third, 9.05). Closing out the track events was the 4X400m relay team taking first with a 4:02.04 finish.
"Overall, I was pleased with how our team competed today. As a staff, we know once we put other key members of the team in place, along with key training cycles, we will be a much stronger team," head coach Willie Randolph said.
On the men's side, John Calvert and Mychael King threw for personal bests in the shot put, Calvert took first place with his 53-0 3/4 throw and King took second throwing 51-7 3/4.
In other field events, Andrew Kruskamp took first in the high jump (6-4) and Jacob McDonald took second (6-2), Marcus Briedinger won the pole vault (15-7), Alex Rose took fourth in the weight throw (47-11) and Joshua Kettlewell took first in the 60m hurdles during the pentathlon for CMU (8.68) as well as the high jump (5-11 1/4). The event wins helped Kettlewell take first in the pentathlon event with 3,245 points.
Freshman Renaldo Powell won the 60m hurdles in his first collegiate meet (8.30) while Branden Post finished runner-up (8.64). Post also finished runner-up in the 800m.
Other notable performers were Daniel Rau in the 60m (fifth, 7.10), Christopher Thomas in the 400m (second; 51.03) and DeJuan Calloway in the 400m (fifth; 52.10).
CMU's 4X400 team finished second with a 3:26.88 finish, the Chippewas also took first in the distance medley with a 10:38.33 finish.
"Now we need to stay focused on our team and individual goals during the holidays in order to build on today's success," Randolph said.
The Chippewas will be back in action after the holiday break as they host the CMU Open on Jan. 8, 2010.
