MOUNT PLEASANT- The Central Michigan women’s track and field team successfully captured eleven first place spots out of thirteen events at the Jack Skoog Open.
The Chippewas competed in a non-scored event at home, their last until the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. Their performance was a good indication of next week’s performances at the MAC, something head coach Karen Lutzke is hopeful of.
“We had a good performance tonight,” Lutzke said. “We did well on events and overall just had a good performance.”
With eleven Chippewas taking first there were many notable performances on the night. Taking first in the field events were Ashley Esparza in the pole vault with a mark of 11-5 1/4, Katie McColly in the long jump with a distance of 18-4 1/4, Norianna Brown in the shot put with a throw of 44-4 1/4, Erika Schroll in the high jump with a leap of 5-7 and Aleisha Leeper in the triple jump with a clear of 37-5 1/4.
While Schroll’s mark of 5-7 was below her season best, she narrowly missed clearing the NCAA provisional qualifying height of 5-10.
“Erika’s jump was very good,” Lutkze said. “She performed well for us today and should be good going into next weekend's events."
Leading off the track events was Shanaye Carr winning the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.70. Also taking first on the track was Jordan Dunn in the 60m dash with a time of 7.73, Danielle Dakroub in the mile with a time of 5:08.80, Cara Dukes ran a 25.48 in the 200m and captain Erin Dillon ran a 1:39.05 in the 600m. Finishing out the track events was the 4x400m relay team of Stephanie Hurley, Alexandra Sisson, Dillon and Raeanne Lohner finishing first with a time of 4:05.73.
After now completing the indoor regular season the Chippewas look to focus all their energy on the MAC Indoor Championships.
“Today was our tune up,” Lutzke said. “I think now we are ready to really compete at the MAC Championships.”
The Chippewas will compete next Friday and Saturday at the MAC Championships at Kent State University.
