MOUNT PLEASANT -- In conjunction with the State of Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games, the Central Michigan women’s basketball program made a special presentation on Friday.
The Chippewas were awarded a $500 prize for claiming the victory in the Mid-American Conference’s “Pack the House” competition, a nationwide initiative created by the NCAA.
CMU chose to donate the prize to the local Youth Athlete Program, created in conjunction with the Special Olympics for kids 2-7 years old in order to develop motor skills prior to reaching the Special Olympics.
The money is being used to help develop the program created two years ago in the mid-Michigan area.
“It was another opportunity to give back to the community that has given the CMU women’s basketball program so much support,” head coach Sue Guevara said. “It’s a great way to give back to the young athletes in the area.”
The Chippewas claimed the prize by drawing 4,478 fans to their game against Valparaiso. Mid-Michigan elementary and middle schools were invited to attend the game as part of CMU’s “Recess in Rose” promotion.
The program was created to not only show the children an exciting afternoon of women’s basketball, but also as to expose them to CMU’s Leadership Institute, which put on a in-game program of “How to be a leader, not a bully”, which showed the students anti-bullying tactics and key leadership skills.
