MOUNT PLEASANT — The accolades continue to pile up for some of the top performers from the Central Michigan men’s and women’s track and field teams.
Men’s All-American Greg Pilling (London, Ont./Sir Frederick Banting SS) along with regional qualifier Marcus Breidinger (Alma, Mich./Alma HS) joined women’s regional qualifiers Kelly McClure (Iron Mountain, Mich./Iron Mountain HS) and Erika Schroll (Union, Mich./Three Rivers HS) on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team on Tuesday.
Pilling, a junior thrower, earned All-America status after placing eighth in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He shattered the school record in the event with a toss of 197-7 at the NCAA Mideast Regional, finishing runner-up at the meet. He won his first Mid-American Conference title in the discus this spring and also finished runner-up in the hammer throw. Pilling also earned Academic All-MAC honors outdoors as a sport studies major with a 3.35 grade-point average.
Breidinger earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC squad during the indoor season. He qualified for regionals in the pole vault, where he finished 16th with a height of 16-1 1/4. The junior is majoring in biology and carries a 3.31 GPA.
McClure, a senior distance runner, broke her own school record in the steeplechase after crossing the line in 10:48.92 at the Sea Ray Relays. She earned her fifth Academic All-MAC selection in the spring, graduating with a 3.94 grade-point average while majoring in health fitness.
Schroll narrowly missed qualifying for nationals in the high jump after finishing ninth at the NCAA Mideast Regional (5-8 1/2). The junior won the event at both the MAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships and earned Academic All-MAC honors both seasons. She sports a 3.50 GPA as a biology major.
A record 327 student-athletes represented 107 Division I men’s track and field programs across the nation on this year’s all-academic squad while a record 531 student-athletes from 146 Division I institutions were represented on the women’s side.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
