Bench Bunch Can't Carry Chippewas Past Golden Flashes

KENT, Ohio -- A season-best 18 points from Rachel Mauk led a season-best 47 points off the bench, but the Central Michigan women's basketball team couldn't overcome an early 17-point deficit in an 82-76 loss to the Kent State Golden Flashes in Mid-American Conference action at the M.A.C. Center on Wednesday.
Mauk was 6-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-6 from long range in just 19 minutes. Kendra Holman also added double-figures as a reserve, finishing with 12 points, and starter Shonda Long added 11.
Kent State jumped out to a 13-3 edge just three minutes in and expanded its lead to 17 with 10:04 to go in the first half. A 10-0 run cut the lead back down to seven two minutes later, 27-20. The Chippewas would get as close as five with 2:33 remaining in the opening frame, but the Flashes entered halftime with a 43-33 lead.
The KSU lead was 18 with 17:24 remaining, but CMU responded with a 14-3 run that sliced the lead down to two possessions, 66-62, with 6:18 to play. From there, the Golden Flashes were able to keep the Chippewas just out of reach, with CMU unable to get closer than three.
CMU's reserves scored 34 points in the second half, including all 18 of Mauk's tallies, but the Chippewas couldn't overcome a 39-25 shortfall on the glass.
Kaihla Szunko finished with nine points and team highs in rebounds (seven), steals (five) and blocks (three).
Central's offense connected at 52 percent in the second half and 46 percent in the contest, including 44 percent from long range (11-for-25). Kent State's offense caused problems throughout the day for Central Michigan's zone defense, connecting at 53 percent from the floor and 41 percent from deep (9-for-22).
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Chippewas. CMU (7-12, 4-3 MAC) returns to the floor at Rose Center on Saturday against Miami. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
