MOUNT PLEASANT -- Britni Houghton scored a team-best 17 points to move into a tie for second-place on the all-time scoring chart in Central Michigan women's basketball history, but the Chippewas fell to the University of Toledo, 77-68, at Rose Center on Wednesday in Mid-American Conference action.
The Rockets (21-6, 11-3 MAC) held off the Chippewas (11-15, 8-6 MAC) hitting five of their last six threes and 11 treys in the contest. Tied at 56 with 4:59 left, UT connected on back-to-back threes for a six-point lead it would never relinquish.
CMU fell behind by eight early, 23-15, but used a 10-2 run to tie up the game at 25 on a three by Shonda Long. The Chippewas trailed by one at the break, 28-27.
A three-point play by Houghton gave CMU a four-point edge, 52-48, but a 14-4 run quickly gave UT the lead for good, including those back-to-back threes with just under five minutes remaining.
Houghton went 5-for-11 from the field to tie Carla Sterk with 1,539 career tallies. Long added 16 points, while Kaihla Szunko and Kendra Holman added 10 apiece.
The Chippewas shot 42 percent from the floor, 35 percent from deep (8-for-23). The Rockets shot 55 percent from the field, but the difference in the game was their 50-percent day from long range (11-for-22). UT also held a 31-25 edge on the glass.
It was the final regular season women's basketball game in the history of the Rose Center, with the new CMU Events Center slated to be open in time for the 2010-11 season. The loss snapped a nine-game home winning streak and prevented just the second unbeaten home MAC slate in program history.
CMU wraps up the regular season on the road against Ball State on Saturday before closing out the regular season campaign at Ball State on March 2.
