MOUNT PLEASANT — With three weeks to go until the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, the Central Michigan track and field program will separate in an attempt to build on its recent strong efforts.
The Chippewas are sending the majority of their top CMU throwers will represent the Maroon and Gold at the Sooner Invitational at Oklahoma (April 23-24) and the distance runners head to Hillsdale to compete in the Gina Relays (April 22-24).
“This weekend is a chance to get some things done with some of our athletes who have not competed as much the last couple weeks,” head coach Willie Randolph said. “Some of our top athletes get an opportunity to face a higher level of competition. Other athletes will be able to fine tune a few things as we get closer to the MAC meet.”
CMU is coming off a weekend that saw several breakout performances at both the Lenny Lyle Invitational at Louisville and the Dave Rankin Invitational at Purdue. Central combined for seven first-place finishes between the two meets.
Results for each meet this weekend along with a recap of the action will be available on cmuchippewas.com following competition on Friday and Saturday.
News and Notes
Vaulting to the Top — Senior Marcus Breidinger is carrying over his indoor success to the outdoor season. A second-team All-MAC selection indoors, Breidinger is currently leading the conference in the pole vault with a season-high 17-2 3/4 at the Sun Angel Classic, a mark that earned him MAC Field Athlete of the Week honors. His height is tied for the 20th best in the nation.
Passing the Baton — The Chippewa relay teams have posted strong times during the outdoor season. The 4x100m relay unit of Brittnee Shreve, Dierra Riley, Jordan Dunn and Shanaye Carr posted a season-high of 45.56 at the Lenny Lyle Invitational. The time is the second fastest in the MAC this season and also ranks second in school history. The relay team ranks 19th in the region and 33rd in the nation.
Crowded Field — The throws figured to be a strength of the men’s team during the outdoor season with returning All-American Greg Pilling. The lineup has become a two-horse battle as freshman Alex Rose has burst on to the scene in the discus with a MAC-best 179-8, a mark he achieved at the Lenny Lyle Invitational. Pilling is currently third in the league with a toss of 174-7. Rose’s mark ranks 32nd in the country while Pilling’s throw is 54th.
Leaps and Bounds — Erika Schroll is off to a fine start in her effort to defend her MAC high jump title. Schroll’s outdoor best of 5-10 is the top height in the conference and is tied for 27th in the country. Schroll finished tied for 12th in the nation at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
