MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan heavyweight Jarod Trice placed runner-up in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs over the weekend.
Trice earned berths in the University World Team Trials finals after winning individual titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at University Nationals in April.
The finals in each weight class featured a best-of-three-match series. An individual had to win two-of-three periods within a match in order to win the match.
Trice dropped a 2-0 decision to Zach Rey in the freestyle finals. Trice won the first period in both matches against Rey, a 2010 NCAA All-American as a sophomore at Lehigh. In the second match of the series, Rey edged Trice by scores of 1-0 in both of the final two periods.
Brandon Rupp defeated Trice 2-0 in the Greco-Roman finals. Rupp won the first match 7-0, 2-0 before securing the title with a 1-0, 0-4, 1-0 victory.
Trice is next eligible to compete in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the United States World Team Trials in Iowa beginning June 11. Weight class champions at the World Team Trials will compete at the World Championships in Moscow later this year.
If Trice finishes in the top three at the U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle, he can challenge Rey for Rey's spot on the University World Team.
Trice earned All-America honors after placing eighth at the 2010 NCAA Championships. He is a two-time national qualifier who is 50-17 overall against collegiate opponents during the past two seasons.
