Central Michigan vs. Northern Illinois Notes
January 8, 2011 (McGuirk Arena)
CMU 67, NIU 61
CMU was held under 70 points for the first time this season. The Maroon and Gold are now 6-35 when scoring fewer than 70 points.
Kaihla Szunko put together her 10th double-double of the season and 33rd of her career.
CMU defeated NIU for the third consecutive meeting and improved to 3-3 against the Red and Black under head coach Sue Guevara. The Chippewas also improved to 11-6 all-time vs. the Huskies in Mount Pleasant.
The Chippewas improved to 23-7 on their home floor in the last three seasons.
The victory improves CMU to 2-0 in MAC play for the first time since 1990-91, when the Chippewas started conference play with four consecutive wins.
CMU has used the same starting lineup in all 14 games this season.
The Chippewas remained perfect (9-0) when taking a lead into halftime.
With 11 rebounds, Kaihla Szunko now has 823 in her career and moved into seventh on CMU's career chart. She also swiped four steals to become just the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career steals.
The Huskies had won five of six games this season when scoring at least 60 points until CMU's 67-61 victory.
Today marked the first meeting for assistant coach Heather Oesterle against her former team. Oesterle served that same role at NIU from 2008-10.
At 10-4, the Chippewas are off to their best start since 1990-91, when the squad started 12-2. It's just the third time since the 1983-84 MAC Championship season (which featured a 26-game winning streak) that CMU has won 10 of its first 14 contests, and just the sixth time in program history (1979-80, 1982-83, 1983-84, 1989-90, 1990-91, 2010-11)
