Central Michigan vs. Northern Illinois Notes
January 8, 2011 (McGuirk Arena)
CMU 67, NIU 61
Head Coach Sue Guevara
Opening statement…
"It's a win. You can tell when our three ball isn't going, that we are going to struggle a little bit. Our defense was good and we had some really good stops and then we fouled down the stretch. I told our players, good basketball teams can win ugly, but great ones don't. We have a pretty special team."
On team's slowing down the pace of the game…
"It's exactly what I told our players. No one wants to get going with us and I would do the same thing. When we first put this offense in, it was either the three ball or a layup. Now, I think one reason we were scoring a lot of points is because we were shooting the short jumper. Teams are sagging off, so it's penetrate, pull up and shoot the short jumper."
On the play of Taylor Johnson…
"I love the kid. I love her emotion, I love how hard she goes after it. She's aggressive, she keeps balls alive, she gets her hands on a lot of balls, she goes hard to the basket and she can make free throws. She does a great job for us coming off the bench."
Senior Forward Kaihla Szunko
On the team's first 2-0 start in MAC play since 1990-91…
"It kind of tells you what our team is all about. We've been practicing so hard and going so hard. We had a really hard preseason and it's showing."
On NIU slowing the game down...
"Coach said teams are going to want to do that. That's how they are going to try to stop us. We have to figure out ways to still get our points and still run on them. If we get stops on defense we can run teams off the floor."
Freshman forward Taylor Johnson
On where the team needs to improve…
"No matter what team it is, any team has room for improvement. No team is perfect. We have room to improve. We need to rebound the ball more and have a lot of things to work on in practice on Monday."
