MOUNT PLEASANT - Freshmen wide receivers Courtney Williams and Titus Davis combined for 243 yards receiving and three touchdowns Thursday night, but Ohio was able to use a potent ground attack to run past Central Michigan, 43-28.
The Bobcats (7-3, 4-2 MAC) rushed for 309 yards as a team and Beau Blankenship ran for a 129 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, proving to be too much down the stretch for the Chippewas' (3-8, 2-5 MAC) defense.
After Davis pulled in his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard post route from junior quarterback Ryan Radcliff with 4:38 left in the game, Blankenship broke free for a 48-yard touchdown just 2:35 later to close the door on the Maroon and Gold comeback.
The Bobcats jumped out in front by scoring on their first two possessions of the game as Tyler Tettleton scored on a 14-yard run and found LaVon Brazill for a 63-yard pass to give OU a 14-0 lead just eight minutes into the contest.
The Chippewas responded however, with a six-play, 68 yard drive that was capped by a 13-yard touchdown reception by Davis from Radcliff for a 14-7 first-quarter score.
Ohio's Matt Weller hit a 48-yard field goal to start the second quarter to extend the lead to 10, 17-7, before Radcliff found Williams on a 14-yard pass with 10:54 remaining in the second quarter to pull the Chippewas within three, 17-14. With the touchdown pass, Radcliff moved into sole possession of second place for career touchdown passes in CMU history.
Ohio scored 12 unanswered points in the third quarter on a safety, a six-yard pass from Tettleton to Jerry Gross and another Weller field goal to extend its lead to 15, 29-14.
Zurlon Tipton scored his second rushing touchdown of the season at the 10:55 mark of the fourth quarter on a one-yard plunge after Williams hauled in a 31-yard pass down the right sideline, pulling the Chippewas within a score, 29-21. Blankenship responded with his first touchdown of the game however, just 3:49 later, putting the Bobcats back up 15, 36-21.
Williams finished the game with six catches for 133 yards and a score and Davis pulled in six catches as well for 110 yards and two touchdowns for the second-straight week. Radcliff finished the game 26-for-52 for 362 yards and three touchdowns and also threw an interception.
Jahleel Addae paced the defense with his fourth double-digit tackle effort of the season, recording 12 in the contest. Mike Petrucci returned to action for the first time since Oct. 8 at N.C. State to record 10 tackles and a sack.
The Chippewas close their season next Friday when they host MAC West co-leader Toledo at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPNU and kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
