Central Michigan vs. Buffalo
Wednesday, March 9, 2011 (Quicken Loans Arena)
CMU 90, Buffalo 69
Shonda Long 's 12 made field goals also tied for the fifth-most in a MAC Tournament game, the last instance coming in 2007 by Carrie Moore of Western Michigan against Miami (12).
Shonda Long also tied the MAC Tournament record for three-pointers made in a single game with seven. It's the third time a player has connected on three treys in a contest in tournament history, the last by Casey McDowell of Bowling Green against Miami on March 9, 2005. The senior is now within four of the MAC Tournament's record for made treys (11, by three players).
CMU's 12 made three-pointers tied for the second-most by a team in a single MAC Tournament game, behind only the 17 that Western Michigan hit against Bowling Green on March 2, 2000.
The 20-plus scoring effort was the 11th of the season for Shonda Long , 18th in her career.
Kaihla Szunko finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her 19th double-double of the season, 42nd of her career.
CMU used the same starting lineup for the 29th consecutive game.
With Kaihla Szunko 's 13 points, she joined teammate Shonda Long in crossing the 450 point threshold. It is just the third time in school history two players have scored at least 450 points in the same season. Long (491) and Szunko (453) have combined for 944 points this season, trailing CMU's all-time tandem scoring record by 48 (held by Britni Houghton and Angel Chan, 992).
CMU improved to 17-1 this season when holding its opponents to under 80 points.
Shonda Long passed Tracy Renken (1994-97) for No. 6 on CMU's all-time scoring chart on Wednesday. The senior guard now has 1,420 career points, and sits 75 tallies shy of Betsy Yonkman (1983-86) for fifth.
Kaihla Szunko passed Nikki Thompkins (1991-94) for the No. 9 spot on CMU's all-time scoring chart. The senior forward now has 1,263 points in her career, 110 behind LaTanga Cox (1983-86) for eighth.
Kaihla Szunko snared 11 rebounds on Wednesday to pass Sue Nissen (1988-91) on CMU's career chart, moving into No. 3 all-time with 979 career boards. She needs just 21 caroms to become the third player in school history to crack 1,000 rebounds.
Kaihla Szunko 's six made field goals on Wednesday moved her past Sylvia Odum (1982-85) on CMU's career chart, moving her into No. 8 with 499. She also moved up on the single season chart into No. 9 with 182, passing Lisa Zodtner (1983-84).
CMU improved to 43-16 over the last three seasons when shooting at least 40 percent.
With her nine assists, Brandie Baker moved past Suzy Merchant's 1989-90 campaign into second on CMU's single-season chart. Baker now has 149 dimes on the year, just seven shy of Merchant's 156 in 1990-91.
The last time CMU won at least 20 games came in 1990-91 (21).
The Chippewas are now 229-for-648 on the year from three-point range, the second-most made threes in program history (255, 2008-09).
The last time CMU advanced to the semifinals was 1992, when the Maroon and Gold beat Miami in the quarterfinals but fell to Toledo in the semifinals. CMU's last appearance in the MAC Tournament championship game came the year prior, in 1991.
CMU will make its 10th appearance in the MAC Tournament semifinals, including seven straight from 1983-89. The Chippewas have advanced to the championship game on six of the nine previous occasions.
The Chippewas have faced Bowling Green in the semifinals or later four times (three in the semifinals, once in the championship). CMU claimed two of the three semifinal meetings.
