CMU Runs Past Defending Conference Champs at Lenny Lyles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Central Michigan's track and field teams took four first- and seven second-place finishes despite the adverse weather on Friday at the Lenny Lyles Invitational.
The meet utilized a dual scoring format. CMU's women's team defeated three-time defending Sun Belt Conference outdoor champion Western Kentucky while being out-scored by Illinois State and Louisville, the three-time defending Big East Conference outdoor champ. The men's team out-scored Illinois State, Louisville (Big East outdoor runner-up the past two seasons) and Western Kentucky (three-time defending Sun Belt outdoo champion).
The men's and women's 4x400m relay races were canceled due to the weather, as were the triple jump and the men's steeplechase.
Ross Parsons , Charnele Lyons , Tamica Harbour and Kyle Smith all had winning efforts for CMU.
Freshman Parsons won the 200m dash with a time of 21.56. The time is the best 200m time run by a Chippewa this season. The sprinter came in second in the 100m with a time of 10.76.
Charnele Lyons won the women's 1500m run, also setting a new career best with her winning time of 4:31.59.
Kyle Smith , also a backup defensive back on CMU's football team, won the javelin throw with a toss of 190-0 feet. Teammate Timothy Reynolds came in fourth behind Smith with a mark of 141-6.
Sophomore Tamica Harbour took the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.22. Harbour also set a season-best time for the Chippewas. Senior Shanaye Carr took runner-up with a time of 14.65.
Runner-ups included Jacob McDonald in the high jump (6-6), Shanaye Carr in the long jump (season-best 19-3 1/2), Kevin Bacon in the long jump (22-8 1/2), Kevin Mays II in the hammer (182-8), Shawntoreah Turk in the 400m (career-best 55.87) and the 4x100m relay team of Ryan Brooks , Renaldo Powell , Greg Knaus and Parsons with a season-best time of 41.71.
The Chippewas finished three-four-five in the men's shot put, discus and women's 100m. John Calvert took third (53-2 3/4), George Flanner took fourth (51-9 1/4) and Mychael King came in fifth (51-5 3/4) in the shot put. In the discus, Ryan McCullough took third with a toss of 161-4, Mays threw 154-10 and Calvin Jackson posted 152-4. Brittnee Shreve (12.06) led Dierra Riley (12.12) and Kirlene Roberts (12.32) in the 100m.
The rest of the Chippewas are competing at Eastern Michigan's Twilight meet this weekend. Results will be available Saturday night.
