MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan's track and field teams will head to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Northern Illinois University Thursday.
"We've been training for championship week every single day," said CMU director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph. "The key for us will be making sure everybody takes their events one event at a time."
The Chippewas look for strong performances from their throwers to begin the meet. Ryan McCullough and Mykal Imbrock both broke CMU's school record in the hammer toss this year. Alex Rose's best discus toss this season is less than five feet away from a school record and ranks as the fifth best mark in the country this season.
"I can't speak enough about how Coach Ridgeway has taken the throwers and developed them to another level," Randolph said. "It's come from hard work, dedication and a lot of communication."
At the 2010 outdoor championships, CMU athletes brought home five titles. Erika Schroll won the high jump, Raeanne Lohner won the 5000m, Dierra Riley won the 100m, Greg Pilling won the discus and Branden Post won the 400m hurdles.
Riley, Lohner and Post are returners on the team this year, but Lohner has been injured and Post has only competed unattached.
The women's team finished fourth and the men took fifth at last year's championships.
Qualifying will take place on Thursday, and finals will be split-up between Friday and Saturday.
Complete results will be available on cmuchippewas.com following each day of the championships.
