MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan women's basketball head coach Sue Guevara recently took part in a two-and-a-half day elite leadership-training program at Columbia University.
The final 2011 session of The Center for Coaching Excellence welcomed 28 college women's basketball coaches, with the invitation-only event concluding on June 10.
Capitalizing on the resources of Columbia University, one of the world's leading research universities, and the WBCA, The Center for Coaching Excellence provided an unparalleled, exclusive learning experience for the WBCA Board of Directors and conference captains. Utilizing collaborative and interactive learning sessions along with lectures and panel discussions featuring experts in college athletics, the clinic provided college women's basketball coaches with valuable networking opportunities with their peers and top industry leaders.
"This was the best clinic that I've ever been to," Guevara said. "I was truly inspired when I left there. I learned a lot about the value of vision. The one quote that really stuck with me was 'Your title makes you a manager, your people make you a leader.' That quote inspired me to help our staff and our players to be better than what we are and strive to make the most of every opportunity."
The program included panel discussions from a wide variety of leaders from both the college athletics industry and other sectors of industry. Facilitated group-learning sessions were led by Dr. Cathie T. Siders, a clinical psychologist, organizational consultant and executive coach.
"You're always striving to get better and a big part of that deals with team chemistry," Guevara said. "You hear coaches say a lot of time that a team doesn't have chemistry or their leadership isn't where they want it to be. Ultimately, that's on us. It's on us as coaches to build chemistry, to build and nurture leaders along the way. All the intangibles we learned about at the clinic were so valuable."
"It was some of the best time I've spent as a coach and I'm very grateful to the WBCA, Columbia University and Geno Auriemma who all helped make this happen," Guevara said.
Guevara led the Chippewas to their best season since 1990-91, as her 2010-11 squad finished with a 20-11 record and a berth in the WNIT.
