Two Chippewas Place at Junior National Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT - Two members of Central Michigan's nationally ranked recruiting class recently placed in the top three at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D.
Ty Davis (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota West HS) finished runner-up at 135 pounds in freestyle, while Lucas Smith (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling HS) placed third at 145 pounds in Greco-Roman.

Davis helped lead his Ohio team to a fourth-place finish among 31 states represented in the freestyle tournament, while Smith's Illinois squad won the Greco-Roman team title.
Davis and Smith were part of a CMU recruiting class that was ranked No. 3 nationally in 2011 by InterMat, TheOpenMat.com and D1CollegeWrestling.net.
Davis was a four-time state qualifier and three-time place finisher in Ohio, while Smith placed in the top three at the Illinois state tournament three times, including winning a state championship with a 44-0 record as a senior. Smith was ranked as the No. 43 overall recruit in the country in 2011.
CMU claimed a share of its 12th Mid-American Conference title in 13 seasons and won its 10th straight conference tournament championship in 2011. The Chippewas finished tied for 13th at the NCAA Championships, their fifth straight top-15 finish and seventh in the last eight seasons.
