MOUNT PLEASANT - United States Olympic team hopeful Jarod Trice has embarked on his own personal barnstorming tour.
Trice has delayed his final season of eligibility at Central Michigan to pursue a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, and he has undertaken an ambitious competition and training schedule to prepare for this spring's Olympic Team Trials.
A two-time NCAA All-American as a heavyweight for CMU, Trice added another accolade to his résumé two weeks ago when he claimed his second career Midlands Championships title. The No. 1-seed at heavyweight, Trice won five straight matches—all by two points or fewer, three in overtime—to reclaim the title he first earned as a college sophomore in 2009. Trice was a finalist at the 2010 Midlands, but dropped a 2-1 decision to eventual national champion Zach Rey in the finals.
"It was really good for me to get the mat time mostly," Trice said of his performance at Midlands. "Beating the guy from Iowa (in the finals) was a good win, and I was really happy with my wrestling throughout the tournament."
Trice traveled to the East Coast on Monday, where he will spend the next three weeks training in preparation for the Dave Schultz Invitational, set for Feb. 1 in Colorado Springs. Following that tournament, Trice will spend several weeks training in Cuba.
"There is a really good training camp there and there is a tournament I'll be competing in," Trice said. He will be joined by fellow Americans Jordan Burroughs (an NCAA and world champion) and Raymond Jordan (two-time NCAA All-American), as well as several elite Russian wrestlers at the training camp.
Beyond the training camp in Cuba, Trice has not committed to any other tournaments or competitions prior to the Olympic Trials.
Trice finished runner-up in freestyle at the New York Athletic Club International in November to secure his spot in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The trials are set for April 21-22 in Iowa City and will determine the team that will represent the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Trice earned All-America honors for CMU in 2010 and 2011, finishing eighth and fourth, respectively, at the NCAA Championships. He was a national semifinalist as a junior in 2011. The three-time national qualifier boasts a career record of 79-22 and has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.
