YPSILANTI, Mich. - Jas'Mine Bracey posted her fourth double-double on the season but it was Eastern Michigan who claimed a 73-60 win over Central Michigan on Thursday.
The Eagles (12-6, 4-1 MAC) began the game on a 10-0 run that was ended by a three-pointer from Taylor Johnson. EMU's offense kept rolling as it built a 20-point cushion with 8:47 left until halftime. The Chippewas (11-8, 3-2 MAC) strung together an 8-1 run, behind six points from Bracey, that cut the deficit to 12, 35-23, with 5:29 remaining on the clock. The home team held onto a double-digit lead and took a 43-28 lead into the half.
"It was too big of a hole to get out of," said head coach Sue Guevara. "I thought our youth showed itself tonight. I am very disappointed in our lack of toughness and we had poor shot selection down the stretch."
After being down 19, 2:37 into the second half, CMU used a 15-4 run to cut the lead to eight, and force the home team into a timeout with 12:51 remaining. The Chippewas made the difference seven after a Johnson steal that led to a Crystal Bradford layup with 6:34 left to play. That would be as close as CMU got to EMU, who made six free throws in the final 1:42.
The Maroon and Gold were led by Bracey who had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson chipped in with 15 and Jessica Green added 12.
It was a tale of two halves, as CMU shot 27.3 percent in the first but a blistering 50 percent in the second to finish 37.7 percent from the floor. The Chippewas out-scored the Eagles in the paint, 38-36, and 24-3 in bench points.
CMU finished the first round of MAC West play and will head to the East on Sunday when it faces Kent State at 2 p.m.
