10/9/2012 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Sixth-year head coach Sue Guevara enters the 2012-13 season just one shy of career win number 200. Guevara, who has led the Chippewas to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, has recorded 76 wins at the helm of the Chippewas and held a record of 123-82 at the University of Michigan over seven seasons.
CB-23
Sophomore Crystal Bradford is in a league of her own in the Mid-American Conference as she was the only player to lead her team in scoring (455/14.7 ppg), rebounds (269/8.4 rpg), steals (69/2.2 spg) and blocks (57/1.8 bpg) last season. The All-Freshman team and Honorable Mention All-MAC selection stepped her game up in the Chippewas MAC Tournament run, setting tournament records for most field goals made (36), field goals attempted (80) and rebounds (53), while averaging 16.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Scoring Galore
The Chippewas, who ranked 32nd in the country in scoring last season with 71.1 points per game, return 94.2 percent of their scoring, including their top eight scorers from a year ago. In addition, CMU's top five scorers from last season were all underclassmen and each have at least two years of eligibility remaining.
Gotta Get to 70
Known for its high-octane offense, Central Michigan has gone 60-35 under Guevara when scoring 70 points or more. In contract, the Chippewas have gone 16-47 when they fail to hit the 70-point threshold, with eight of the 16 wins coming last season. CMU scored 70-plus points in 19 of its 36 games last season, finishing second in the MAC in points per game.
20-point Prowess
The Chippewas have had a player score 20-plus points on 105 occasions in head coach Sue Guevara's five season (155 games). CMU had just 14 such scoring outputs in its previous 114 games prior to Guevara's tenure. The feat was accomplished 13 times during the 2011-12 season, led by Crystal Bradford's 27-point effort at Northern Illinois on Jan. 5.
3,2,1... 1,000!
Senior guard Brandie Baker needs just three points to become the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points. Baker has averaged 11.0 points per game during her stellar career thus far and also ranks fifth all-time in program history in total assists with 332.
Downtown DiGuilio
Junior guard Niki DiGuilio will look to continue her climb up the three-point field goals made record list, entering the 2012-13 campaign with 125 treys in her career. DiGuilio led the Chippewas with 56 three-point field goals last season, ranking 10th in the MAC. Of her 180 field goals made during her first two seasons, 69 percent of them have come from behind the arc.
Rewriting the Record Books
Central Michigan set a number of team records en route to their second-straight Women's National Invitational Tournament appearance last season, setting new marks in points scored (2,560), rebounds (1,566), steals (410) and blocks (144).
Sixth Player of the Year
Senior guard Jalisa Olive returns for her fourth and final season in the Maroon and Gold after earning the Mid-American Conference Sixth Player of the Year award last season. Olive averaged 6.1 points, 1.9 steals and 1.2 assists per game, pouring in a season-high 26 points at Ball State on Feb. 9.
Straight Thievery
The Chippewas finished 24th in the country last season averaging 11.4 steals per game. Six separate Chippewas finished with 40-plus steals, led by Crystal Bradford's 69, which rank ninth in single-season history.
Block Party
No team in the MAC finished with more blocks than the Maroon and Gold last season, as the Chippewas swatted a program record 144 shots. Jas'Mine Bracey finished the year averaging just over a block a game, while Bradford blocked the second most shots in single season history with 57.
Living Up to the Hype
After being a part of the No. 43 ranked recruiting class in the country in 2010, Bradford, Green and Bracey lived up to the billing when they became just the second trio of players from one program selected to the MAC All-Freshman team.
Chippewas Add Senior Schroll
Senior forward Jessica Schroll will join the Chippewas rotation following the completion of the first semester. Schroll was added to the program after starting the first 10 games for Iowa State last season where she average 6.9 points per game on 47.5 percent shooting.
