MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan's Jarod Trice is continuing his journey toward the United States Olympic Team Trials.
Trice, who is taking an Olympic redshirt during what would be his senior season at CMU, recently placed in the top four at a pair of high profile international tournaments.
On Feb. 1, Trice finished runner-up at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs. Trice's biggest win in the tournament came in the semifinals, when he defeated Russia's Eduard Bazrov, 3-0, 0-0, 1-0.
In the finals, Trice dropped a narrow 0-1, 1-0, 1-0 decision to Dom Bradley, who like Trice is redshirting during what would be his senior season at Missouri.
That match marked the third significant matchup between Trice and Bradley in the past year. Bradley was a 3-2 winner over Trice in the third-place match at the 2011 NCAA Championships, and he defeated Trice, 0-1, 1-1, 3-1, in the consolation final at the 2011 United States World Team Trials.
Shortly after the Dave Schultz Memorial, Trice departed for Cuba with a contingent of American wrestlers to participate in a training camp and the Cerro Pelado International in Havana.
Trice split four matches to finish in third place at the Cerro Pelado International. He defeated Cuba's Disney Rodriguez and the Dominican Republic's Carlos Felix before falling to the USA's Tervel Dlagnev and Germany's Nick Mathuhin.
Dlagnev, America's No. 1-ranked heavyweight, was a two-time NCAA Division II national champion and three-time national finalist at Neb.-Kearney, winning titles in 2007 and 2008. He won the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials in 2011 and was a world bronze medalist in 2009. Mathuhin is the No. 1-ranked heavyweight in Germany.
Trice's runner-up finish at the New York Athletic Club International in November secured him a spot in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, where he will compete in the 120kg weight class of freestyle. The Olympic Team Trials are set for April 21-22 in Iowa City. Joining Trice in Iowa City will be Wynn Michalak, a three-time All-American for CMU and 2008 NCAA finalist at 197 pounds. Michalak will be competing in the 96kg weight class of freestyle.
