Bennett Places Sixth at NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS - Central Michigan junior Ben Bennett has finished in sixth place in the 184-pound bracket at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Bennett, the No. 3 seed at 184 pounds, was defeated by the No. 5 seed, Minnesota's Kevin Steinhaus, 3-1 in the fifth-place match Saturday afternoon. Steinhaus used a third-period reversal and riding time to earn the decision.
Bennett moved to the fifth-place match when he was defeated by the No. 9 seed, Appalachian State's Austin Trotman, 2-1 in the consolation semifinals. Neither wrestler scored an offensive point; Trotman was awarded his first point when Bennett was called for a locked hands violation early in the second period, and Trotman added an escape for a 2-0 lead after two periods. Bennett could only manage an escape in the opening seconds of the third period.
Just the third three-time Division I All-American in CMU history, Bennett finishes his season 34-6 overall.
As a team, the Chippewas will finish 24th in the 70-team field at the NCAA Championships with 24 team points.

- Ben Bennett is CMU's first 184-pound All-American since Christian Sinnott in 2008.
- Ben Bennett is CMU's third 184-pound All-American since 1999, when the current weight-class system was implemented. He joins Mike Greenfield (seventh, 1999) and Christian Sinnott (fourth, 2008) as 184-pound All-Americans.
- Since the adoption of the current weight-class system in 1999, Ben Bennett is the only CMU wrestler to earn All-America honors in different weight classes in consecutive seasons. He was an All-American at 174 pounds in both 2010 and 2011.
- This is the 10th consecutive year CMU has produced at least one All-American.
- Tom Borrelli has coached 36 All-Americans in his 21 seasons at CMU, the eighth most All-Americans of any active coach in the country.
