MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Northwestern scored three second-half goals Sunday as the eighth-ranked Wildcats defeated Central Michigan, 4-0, in a non-conference game at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
"I thought we did a very nice job in the first half, especially on penalty corners," CMU coach Cristy Freese said. "We are just trying to clean up some things and get our team focused on that."
It was the last game of a three-game homestand for the Chippewas, who are 4-9. CMU won the first two against Mid-American Conference foes Longwood and Miami (Ohio).
CMU leads the MAC at 3-0.
Forward Kelley Stump led the Wildcats (10-4) with a hat trick. Stump sealed the deal with two goals over a four-minute span midway through the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds made 14 saves for the Chippewas, who were outshot 29-5 and had two penalty corners to Northwestern's 19.
Senior forward Cayleigh Immelman attempted to spark the CMU offense throughout the game. Immelman contributed three shots but couldn't connect.
CMU plays a MAC game at Missouri State (3-11, 0-3) on Friday, Oct. 17, and a non-leaguer at St. Louis (2-10) on Sunday, Oct. 19.
"We need to get focused and be ready for Missouri State," Freese said. "They are a good team and we are playing on the road. I told our team that we need to clean up stuff this week and get ready to go on Friday."
