
Chippewas Battle, But Fall to UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - Three times, Central Michigan drew within a goal.
But try as they might, the Chippewas couldn't come up with the equalizer Sunday as they dropped a 5-3 non-conference field hockey game to UC Davis.
The match ended CMU's three-game west-coast road trip, which included 5-0 losses to Pacific and eighth-ranked Stanford.
CMU (1-8) opens Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Ball State.
Freshman Haley Bova scored two goals, her first as a collegian, and Kaysie Gregory had one for CMU against UC Davis (2-5), which snapped a three-game losing streak. The three goals was a season high for the Chippewas. It was Gregory's second goal of the year.
Gigi Fasanello had two assists and Chloe McIlwaine had one for the Chippewas, who were outshot 21-13. It was the first assists of the season for both Fasanello and McIlwaine. UC Davis (2-5) finished with eight penalty corners; the Chippewas had seven.
Kayla Wigney scored two goals to lead the Aggies, who led 2-0 at halftime. Gregory beat UC Davis goalie Makheila MacDonald to the stick side at the 41-minute, 36-second mark to pull the Chippewas within 3-1.
Less than four minutes later, Kristin Rodgers scored to restore the Aggies' lead to two goals, 3-1. Bova answered just 1:21 later to bring CMU within a goal at 3-2.
Agustina Singh scored for the Aggies at the 56:07 mark to make it 4-2 and, a little over a minute later, Bova one-timed a Fasanello pass by MacDonald to again pull CMU to within a goal at 4-3.
Wigney scored with just over five minutes remaining for the final margin.
Sadie Lynn Reynolds made eight saves in goal for CMU. MacDonald finished with four saves.
