Central Michigan sends condolences to the family of Nate Huffman, the first seven-footer in CMU basketball history, who passed away at the age of 40 on October 15.
Huffman was honorable mention All-MAC in 1997 while leading the league in rebounding. Sporting an NBA logo tattoo on his arm, he was a favorite target of opposing fans and their heckling. Huffman played two seasons for the Chippewas after earning All-America honors at Lansing Community College.
Nate played in the CBA, overseas and briefly in the NBA following his collegiate career. He was a star for one of the top international teams, Maccabi Tel Aviv, for three seasons. He was named the FIBA SuproLeague MVP in 2001 while leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to the SuproLeague title. The team won three national titles and state cups. One of his coaches for Maccabi was current Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt.
Huffman was signed by the Toronto Raptors in 2002 but played just seven games before an injury ended his career.
