TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Canisius took advantage of four Central Michigan errors in downing the Chippewas, 7-4, Sunday in CMU's fourth and final game of the Indiana State Invitational.
CMU (13-7) finished 2-2 in the invitational.
Junior left-hander Adam Aldred (1-1) started for the Chippewas and took the loss. He allowed five runs, none earned, on five hits through 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four.
"I thought he threw very well through four innings and into the fifth inning the first two hitters, but for whatever reason he wasn't able to secure that last out," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said.
Canisius scored four runs after a two-out error by CMU in the fifth, extending its lead to 5-0.
The same situation occurred in the sixth, as nobody was on base with two outs when CMU made an error that resulted in two more Canisius runs.
"Every single one of their runs was after two outs," Jaksa said. "They either got walked or they got hits after we made an error. We just basically weren't able to pitch over our mistakes today. That's really what it all boiled down to."
Josh Pierce and Sean Renzi pitched a combined 3 1/3 innings of relief for CMU. Renzi was charged with two runs, neither of which was earned.
The Chippewas managed seven hits and walked six times, but stranded 10.
Tyler Huntey homered and finished with two hits to lead the Chippewas at the play, Zack Fields drove in two runs on a pair of sacrifice fly, and Pat MacKenzie picked up an RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk.
CMU goes to South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday for a 6:05 p.m. non-league game against Notre Dame (14-4).
The Chippewas are scheduled to open Mid-American Conference play at Theunissen Stadium on Friday, March 20, against Ohio.
Game times are 3:05 p.m. Friday, 2:05 p.m. Saturday, and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
