
Chippewas Fall at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame took advantage of some first-inning Central Michigan miscues Wednesday in handing the Chippewas an 8-3 non-conference baseball loss at the Irish's Frank Eck Stadium.
It was the Chippewas' final tuneup before they begin Mid-American Conference play this weekend at Theunissen Stadium against Ohio. The Chippewas (13-8) and Bobcats (11-6) open a three-game series on Friday (3:05 p.m.).
Notre Dame (15-4) used a hit batsman, a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly, and two hits in jumping to a 4-0 lead after one inning Wednesday against the Chippewas.
CMU outhit the Irish, 10-9, but stranded 12 runners, including seven in scoring position. All 10 of the Chippewas' hits were singles.
Zach McKinstry and Logan Regnier had two hits apiece for the Chippewas. Joe Houlihan, Daniel Jipping and McKinstry each had an RBI.
Jordan Grosjean (0-3) started for CMU and took the loss. He surrendered five runs (three earned) on five hits, while walking one and striking out two.
Connor Kelly, Josh Pierce and Sean Renzi each worked in relief for the Chippewas.
Notre Dame starter Ryan Smoyer (1-0) earned the win. He allowed seven hits and walked two in 4 1/3 innings. Ryan Lidge had two hits and drove in three runs for Notre Dame.
