MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan wrestling coach Tom Borrelli has announced his 2015 class of signees, which comprises five wrestlers including four who prepped at Michigan high schools.
The class includes Diallo Matsimela, projected to wrestle at 197 pounds, of Detroit; Tristan Gregory (184) of Gaylord; Mason Smith (141) of Clio; and Logan Parks (157) of Taylor along with Richie Screptock (149) of Oregon City, Ohio.
"All of them were pretty good in high school, multiple-time state placers, and some state championships in there," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "I think eventually they can all be major players in our program."
Last year, the Chippewa freshman class comprised 13 student-athletes. At five, this year's is significantly smaller, but with just two seniors who graduated from the 2014-15 squad, the Chippewa roster is loaded with returnees.
The five new Chippewas combined to compile an 88.7 win percentage during their respective high school careers, racking up 811 wins against 103 losses along with 14 state-tournament placings and three championships, two by Smith.
Smith finished his prep career at Clio High School with a 165-10 mark and two Division II state titles, the first at 112 pounds as a sophomore in 2013, the second at 119 in 2014. He finished third at 135 as a senior, and fourth as a freshman at 103 in 2012.
• Matsimela compiled a 117-8 won-loss record at Annapolis High School in Dearborn Heights, placing third at 189 pounds in the Division II state tournament in both 2014 and 2015.
• Gregory went 148-31 at Gaylord High School, placing second at 189 in the Division II state tournament in March, and fifth as a junior in 2014.
• Parks went 197-26 during his career at Anderson High School in Southgate, placing second at 145 pounds in the Division I state tournament as a senior. He was third at 140 as a junior.
• Screptock prepped at Clay High School where he compiled a 184-28 career mark, winning a state title at 132 pounds as a junior in 2014. He was fourth at 138 as a senior, and has two other Ohio state-tournament placings on his resume (fourth, 120, in 2013; seventh, 113, 2012).
The Chippewas finished 9-6 in duals last season, including 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference.
