ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Central Michigan women's soccer team fell to Michigan, 3-1, in a non-conference match Thursday at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Chippewas (1-3-1) play host to 24th-ranked DePaul in their home opener Sunday (1 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer Complex. The Blue Demons (4-1-1) are scheduled to play host to Western Michigan on Friday.
The Wolverines (5-2-0) outshot CMU, 24-4, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Wolverines are among others receiving votes in the NCAA Top 25 poll.
"The takeaway is you can go in and you can play and find moments against a top-25 team," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Opportunities to work on some things we wanted to do, and work on concepts that we've been working on. I think we made the most of those opportunities.
"Hats off to Michigan. They're good. But I thought we put out a performance to build on. That's my takeaway."
Junior Eliza Van de Kerkhove scored the Chippewas' goal in the 64th minute, cutting CMU's deficit to 2-1. It was unassisted, and it was her first of the season.
CMU freshman goalkeeper Zoie Reed made nine saves.
"She made them earn their goals tonight," McGahey said of Reed. "She did a good job. Her fourth college game, and she continues to rise to the occasion. She made a couple saves to take goals away from Michigan. She definitely did her part tonight to try to get us the result."
Taylor Timko and Abby Kastroll scored first-half goals to put the Wolverines up, 2-0, at halftime. Corinne Harris scored an insurance goal in the 77th minute off a Kastroll assist.
