KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Central Michigan volleyball team captured its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season Saturday, defeating Western Michigan in five sets.
The Chippewas rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the fourth set, 25-17, and the fifth, 15-9. CMU won the second set, 25-23. The Broncos took sets one, 27-25, and three, 25-20.
The victory came one night after CMU dropped its league opener at Northern Illinois, 3-1.
"I saw a great fight in our team tonight," CMU coach Erik Olson said. "It was just a bigger push for us tonight and we didn't let the little things faze us as much."
CMU moves to 6-9, 1-1 in the MAC. Western falls to 5-12, 1-1.
"Western is Western, they do know how to win especially in the MAC," said Olson. "The biggest thing for us was getting that first MAC win and to do it against Western was big."
The Chippewas have not beaten WMU on the road since 2006.
Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Meichtry provided the Chippewas with a shot in the arm offensively, collecting a team-high 16 kills on a .324 hitting percentage.
"She has had a lot of good matches for us this year," Olson said of Meichtry, who also had five blocks. "She did some great things for us tonight, not just with the kills, but with her blocking as well."
Jordan Bueter posted 14 kills, 15 digs and six aces for the Chippewas; Paige Carey and Angie White finished with six blocks apiece; setter Kathia Sanchez tallied 43 assists along with 14 digs; Taylor Roberston had 10 kills; and freshman libero Jamison Wolffis led CMU with 22 digs.
Sydney LeMay had 17 kills and Alysia Baznik added 14 for the Broncos.
The Chippewas will continue their MAC schedule on Thursday, Oct. 1, as they travel to Ypsilanti for a matchup with Eastern Michigan, which is 8-7, 0-2. CMU returns home Oct. 3, to face Kent State, 7-7, 1-1.
