AKRON, Ohio. — The Central Michigan soccer team looked to be on its way to another victory Thursday night before surrendering three late goals to fall, 3-2, in double overtime to Akron in a Mid-American Conference game at the Zips' FirstEnegry Stadium.
The Chippewas slip to 13-2-2 overall, 5-2-2 in the MAC. The Zips, who were winless in their last 10 starts, move to 4-9-4, 1-4-4. Six of CMU's last seven games have gone to extra time. The Chippewas were unbeaten in OT before Thursday's contest.
"I'm obviously disappointed with result tonight," said CMU coach Peter McGahey. "I thought we had the game right where we wanted it and unfortunately we just let one slip away tonight.
"The game is hard. I think (the loss) just needs to serve as a reminder of what can happen. I think it can provide some perspective and motivation. Our process and our goals that we are trying to accomplish haven't changed."
CMU held a 2-0 advantage with under six minutes to play when Akron's Ashley Amoto scored an unassisted goal to pull the Zips within one. Kiana Zuk scored the equalizer with 43 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Julia Crowe scored in the 108th minute to push Akron to its first league win of the season.
The Chippewas finished with 25 shots (12 on goal) compared to 19 (10 on goal) posted by Akron. CMU held a 10-8 advantage in cornerkicks.
Senior midfielder Samatha Maher scored both goals for the Chippewas. The first came in the 30th minute on a penalty shot and the second came in the 73rd minute on an assist from Marle Bringard.
Maher has totaled three goals this season.
CMU senior goalkeeper Kristen Knutson surrendered three goals on nine shot attempts, suffering just her second loss of the season.
The Chippewas will look to rebound on Sunday as they travel to Buffalo (6-7-4, 3-4-2) for a conference matchup at 1 p.m.
The Bulls played to a 1-1 draw with Eastern Michigan on Thursday night.
