MIAMI, Ohio - Madison Costner scored in the final five minutes of regulation time to send the Central Michigan soccer team to overtime in its Mid-American Conference at Miami (Ohio) on Friday.
However, the RedHawks got the game-winner just over six minutes into the extra session in posting a 2-1 win over the Chippewas.
CMU slipped to 6-6-3, 1-4-2 MAC while Miami is 1-12-1, 1-5-1. Central Michigan will look to bounce back on Sunday (2 p.m.) at Ball State (6-6-2, 4-1-1).
"There was some high highs and low lows," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "That fight to battle back was really positive, the team had good fight and spirit. But to give up that set piece in overtime is demoralizing."
Chloe Knue put Miami ahead 1-0 in the 38th minute with an assist by Soph Spinell. CMU couldn't respond right away, but knotted up the game minutes before the clock hit zeros.
"The momentum going into overtime was positive," McGahey said. "We created some good chances and counter attacks, but couldn't capitalize."
Lydia Broshnahan headed in the game-winner off a free kick by Amy Malone.
Central Michigan finished with 12 corner kicks to Miami's three. The Chippewas also outshot the RedHawks, 17-7.
Madison Pogarch finished with four shots, three of which were on goal. Lexi Pelafas had three shots and an assist, and Shannon Magnan tallied three total shots.
Zoie Reed made one save in goal for the Chippewas. Miami goalkeeper Patricia Koutoulas made six saves.
