
Atienza, Marten Lead Chippewas At EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Jordan Atienza and Drew Marten placed first in their respective weight classes to lead the Central Michigan wrestling team on Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open at the Eagles' Convocation Center.
A total of 14 Chippewas earned a top-six finish. No team scores were kept.
The Chippewas entertain Michigan State at McGuirk Arena on Friday, Nov. 17 in their first dual of the season.
Atienza, a junior, went 3-0 to win the 197-pound weight class in the Open Division on Saturday at EMU. Marten, a freshman, finished 4-0 to capture the 133-pound title in the Freshman-Sophomore Division.
Atienza opened with a 6-3 win over Josh Roetman of Navy; he then defeated Kellan Stout of Pitt, 6-2; and in the final, he topped Stevie Cervantes of Navy, 6-2.
Marten started his tournament run with a 17-0 technical fall over Colin Schuster of Kent State. He then posted a 9-0 major decision victory over Jake Cherry of Pitt; and then defeated Michael De La Pena of Indiana, 11-4. In the final, Marten topped Cody Trybus of Navy, 5-2.
Nine Chippewas placed in the top eight in the Open Division, while five placed in the Freshman-Sophomore Division.
In the Open Division, CMU redshirt freshman Matt Stencel placed second and senior Newton Smerchek was fourth at 285; Dresden Simon (133) placed third; Drew Hildebrandt (125) and Deven Perez (133) both placed fifth; and Reiley Brown (141), Hunter Rollins (174) and Landon Pelham (197) each placed sixth.
In the Freshman-Sophomore Division, CMU's Bret Fedewa and Kam Bush placed second and third, respectively, at 165; and Luke Raczkowski (149) and Jake Lowell (184) both placed sixth.
• Hildebrandt, a redshirt freshman, opened with an 11-0 loss to Drew Mattin of Michigan, and then posted a 21-5 technical fall victory over Cameron Lathem of Cleveland State. He defeated Benny Gomez of Muskegon Community College, 2-0, in the fifth-place match.
• Simon opened with a 14-3 major-decision victory over Jack Tolin of Northwestern, then pinned Edinboro's Avery Henry in 35 seconds. Simon lost, 9-4, to Micky Phillippi of Pitt in a semifinal match, then captured the third-place match with an 8-3 win over Alijah Jeffery of Northern Illinois.
• Perez, a redshirt freshman, dropped his opening match, 10-1, to Jeffery. Perez then came back with a 3-1 win over Michael Volyanyuk of Michigan; defeated Michael Stewart of Findlay, 3-2; and in the fifth-place match scored an 18-1 technical fall over Andrew Coghill of Cleveland State
• Brown, a redshirt freshman, fell in his opener, 5-4, to Ben Lamantia of Michigan. He rebounded with a 17-1 technical fall over Ryan Skonieczny of Findlay; downed Alex Hrisopoulos of Michigan State, 7-2; and then defeated McCoy Kent of Northern Illinois, 5-4. Brown lost, 9-4, to Nick Zanetta of Pitt in the fifth-place match.
• Rollins, a senior, lost, 7-0, to Drew Hughes of Michigan State in his opening bout and then reeled off three consecutive wins: 8-3 over Colton Carroll of Cleveland State; 6-1 over Michael Aldrich of Northern Illinois; and 5-3 over teammate Collin Lieber. Rollins lost, 8-2, to Cleveland State's Gabe Stark in the fifth-place match.
• Pelham, a redshirt freshman, opened with a 6-5 loss to Stevie Cervantes of Navy. He then defeated Jared Langley of Eastern Michigan on a 14-3 major decision before losing to Josh Roetman of Navy, 17-11, in the fifth-place match.
• Stencel, a redshirt freshman, opened with back-to-back pin victories, the first in 2:02 over Jacob Parker of Pitt, and the second in 16 seconds over Navy's Austin Faunce. Stencel then won by medical forfeit over William Miller of Edinboro before losing to Pitt's Ryan Solomon, 2-0, in the championship match. Solomon, a senior, is a three-time NCAA qualifier.
• Smerchek, a senior, opened with wins over Christian Rebottaro of Michigan State, 2-1, and Mimmo Lytle of Findlay, 9-4. Smerchek then lost by injury default to Solomon and dropped the third-place match by medical forfeit to Edinboro's Miller.
• Raczkowski, a freshman, rebounded from a 9-4 opening-match loss to Peter Pappas of Edinboro to reach the fifth-place match. Raczkowski defeated Jimmy Muscato of Michigan State, 14-10; defeated Chris Matzke of Edinboro, 13-11; and topped Tim Suter of Edinboro, 5-4, before droping the fifth-place match, 9-3, to Dallas Bulsak of Pitt.
• Fedewa, a freshman, lost to Ohio State's Fritz Schierl, 6-5, in the championship match at 165 in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Fedewa reached the final with a pin in 3:47 of Kent State's Kade Byland and a 9-1 major decision win over Cullen Wolford of Edinboro.
• Bush, a freshman, opened with a 7-1 victory over Jose Acosta of Northern Illinois and then fell to Schierl, 6-2. Bush won the third-place match on a medical forfeit over Cullen Wolford of Edinboro.
• Lowell, a freshman, fell 6-1 in the fifth-place match to Zach Ancewicz of Edinboro. Lowell dropped his opening bout, 6-4, to Brandon Moen of Eastern Michigan. He bounced back with an 8-4 win over Brenden DeVries of Grand Valley State.
