JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Central Michigan baseball team used a four-run inning to take the lead and the bullpen held the fort Saturday as the Chippewas posted an 8-7 victory over East Tennessee State at the Buccaneers' Thomas Stadium.
The Chippewas (1-1) bounced back from an 18-6 Friday loss. The series concludes on Sunday (1 p.m.) when CMU sends sophomore right-hander Dazon Cole to the mound against senior right-hander Blake Smith.
Trailing 7-4, the Chippewas pieced together a four-run seventh inning to seize the lead.
Robert Greenman got things started with a one-out walk and freshman Reed Adams singled. A groundout moved both into scoring position, and Daniel Robinson delivered a two-run single to draw CMU to 7-6.
Jason Sullivan walked and Nick Stokowski singled in the tying run. Zach Gilles then delivered an RBI double to put CMU in front.
Colton Bradley picked up the win in relief of starter Michael Brettell. Bradley, a junior right-hander, allowed three runs on three hits and walked one over three innings. Jordan Grosjean worked the ninth for the save.
East Tennessee threatened in both of its final two turns at bat. Bradley induced an inning-ending grounder in the eighth, stranding the potential tying run at third base.
Grosjean surrendered back-to-back singles to open the ninth. Shortstop Alex Borglin snagged a line drive and flipped to Sullivan at second to double off a baserunner for the first two outs of the inning. Grosjean then got a game-ending groundout.
Robinson and Stokowski finished with two hits apiece to lead CMU at the plate, and Borglin tripled.
Brettell, a sophomore right-hander, allowed four runs on five hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out one.
