KENT, Ohio - A milestone for Central Michigan soccer, but a disappointing outcome.
Lexi Pelafas scored her program-record 27th career goal on Friday, but the celebration of the achievement was tempered by a 2-1 loss to Kent State in CMU's Mid-American Conference opener at the Golden Flashes' Dix Stadium.
Pelafas, a junior, surpassed Stephanie Martin, who scored 26 career goals from 2006-09.
"It's definitely a significant record," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "It is certainly something to be celebrated and rewarded on any given day. It's exciting."
CMU saw its win streak end at three games in slipping to 5-3-1. The Chippewas look to bounce back on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Ohio. The Bobcats are 4-5, 1-0 MAC after their 2-1 overtime win on Friday against Eastern Michigan.
Central Michigan had the control through the first half against Kent State (5-3-1, 1-0 MAC). Pelafas gave the Chippewas the lead 17 minutes in. Sarah Mitchell and Madison Pogarch each drew an assist on the milestone goal.
"I thought it was a tale of two halves," said McGahey. "We had good energy in the first half. After halftime, Kent State turned up the intensity and all of a sudden it was 2-1."
Karli Paracca scored for Kent State three minutes into the second half Sierra Henderson-Muschett notched the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute.
Chippewa goalkeeper Zoie Reed had one save while Ashleah McDonald recorded eight in goal for Kent State.
Central Michigan finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The corner kicks were an even 2-2.
