CMU's Smith Earns MAC Award

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan's Mason Smith was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week on Thursday.
Smith, a sophomore from Clio, went 6-0 to win the 141-pound weight class at the 55th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern, in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Smith, who was seeded first in the tournament, defeated Cole Weaver of Indiana, 6-0, in the title match after posting a 5-4 victory over Bucknell's Tyler Smith in the semifinals.
Both Weaver (13th) and Tyler Smith (16th) entered the tournament nationally ranked ahead of Mason Smith, who is 20th. Smith outscored his six tournament opponents, 34-6, and improved to 24-3 on the season. He has won 12 consecutive matches.
The Chippewas return home to McGuirk Arena and to MAC competition on Sunday (2 p.m.) when they entertain Ohio. CMU is 4-3 in duals (1-0 in the MAC) and is ranked 21st. Ohio, which is scheduled to wrestle at Eastern Michigan on Friday, is 0-4, 0-2.
