MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan field hockey team will head south this weekend with a pair of games, the first an important Mid-American Conference matchup, the second a nonleaguer.
Â
The Chippewas will play league foe Appalachian State on Friday (6 p.m.) in Boone, N.C. On Sunday (noon), CMU will play at Davidson in a nonconference game.
Â
WHERE THEY STAND
The Chippewas enter Friday's game with a 1-13 record and are coming off a 5-1 loss to Kent State. The Mountaineers have a 4-10 mark after an 8-3 loss to No. 16 Wake Forrest. Both teams are 0-3 in conference play.
Â
PUTTING THE BALL IN THE NET
In the loss to Kent State, which is tied for second place in the MAC, the Chippewas registered six shots and had six penalty corners. It is the most of either statistic that they have produced since posting 14 shots and seven penalty corners in a 4-3 overtime loss to Saint Francis on Sept. 7, a stretch of eight games.
Â
CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said her team has been working on turning those shots and penalty corners into goals. Ball possession has been a season-long emphasis for the Chippewas, she added.
Â
"We definitely worked on that this week and we worked on valuing the ball," she said. "Anytime we cross the 25 (yard line), we need to earn something and that's what we've stressed all week at practice."
Â
NEXT
Sunday's opponent, Davidson, is 4-8. A member of the Atlantic 10, the Wildcats are 1-3 in conference play.
Â
The Chippewas finish regular-season play at the CMU Field Hockey Complex on Friday, Oct. 19 (3 p.m.) with a MAC game against Ball State.
