CMU looks to extend win streak on Saturday night at Kent State
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Central Michigan volleyball earned their second-straight win, defeating Eastern Michigan 17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 Thursday at the Eagles' Convocation Center.
Â
CMU improves to 5-18, 2-9 in the Mid-American Conference. EMU falls to 14-11, 6-5.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas committed nine attack errors in dropping the opening set, then stormed back to take three consecutive sets in the match.
Â
CMU posted a .324 attack percentage in sets two and three combined, and committed just 10 attack errors in the final three sets.
Â
The Chippewas never trailed in set two or in set three. In the fourth set, they were down, 23-22, then pulled even on a Maddie Whitfield kill, got the go-ahead point on an EMU attack error, and then Lyza Myers finished it off with a kill on the final point of the night.
Â
AVENGING A LOSS
The win avenges a four-set Sept. 20 loss to the Eagles in Mount Pleasant.
Â
Although the Chippewas won their second straight match, coach Mike Gawlik said the Chippewas did not play their best match of the season.
Â
"I'm optimistic with the fact that we walked away saying 'We can play better than that,' as opposed to being content because we won," Gawlik said. "I think that's the sign of a mature team; that they compare themselves to what they're capable of, not just whether they won the match or not."
Â
LEADERS
Sophomore outside hitter Kalina Smith finished with 15 kills to lead CMU, while freshman outside hitter Savannah Thompson contributed seven kills and shared the team lead in digs with 17 with Megan Kern. Kern also had a team-high three aces.Â
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas play their fourth consecutive MAC road game at Kent State on Saturday (7 p.m.).
