Smith records match-high 20 kills to lead CMU
KENT, Ohio – Central Michigan rallied from a two-set deficit only to fall in five on Saturday to Kent State in a Mid-American Conference volleyball match at the Golden Flashes' M.A.C. Center.
Kent State took the first two sets, 25-21, 25-21, and then the deciding fifth set, 15-10. The Chippewas won the third set, 25-22, and the fourth, 25-23.
CMU saw its win streak end at two in falling to 5-19, 2-10 MAC. Kent State is 12-14, 5-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Flashes broke from a 9-9 tie in the fifth set, scoring six of the set's final seven points to claim the victory.
"I would've like to have seen us maintain our composure a little bit better in set five, certainly after coming back in sets three and four," CMU coach Gawlik said. "I hoped we would've played with a little more confidence with the team really having momentum."
NUMBERS
The Chippewas finished with 32 attack errors, their most since committing 37 against New Mexico during the Husker Invite on Sept. 15. CMU finished with a .182 hitting percentage to Kent State's .171.
LEADERS
CMU sophomore outside hitter Kalina Smith finished with a match-high 20 kills while adding seven digs and two blocks. Middle blockers Jayla Wesley and Maddie Whitfield combined for 20 kills and seven blocks.
GAWLIK
"We played alright, but we just got outplayed by Kent State," Gawlik said. "I thought we needed just one or two more plays to put the sets in our favor. We needed to crank up the urgency, and I left we were passive with some of our attack options."
NEXT
The Chippewas play their final two home matches of the season next weekend when they entertain Ball State on Friday, Nov. 2, and Toledo on Saturday, Nov. 3.
